The updated exam reimplements the 2020 test with modifications: a bank of 128 questions, from which up to 20 are asked; 12 correct answers are required to pass, and the test stops once the applicant reaches 12 correct (pass) or 9 incorrect (fail). Applicants 65+ with 20+ years as LPRs will get 10 questions from a simplified 20-question set and need 6 correct to pass; they may take the civics test in their native language. The English (reading, writing, speaking) portions do not change, and USCIS has posted updated study materials with all 128 questions and answers. Important: If you file before October 20, 2025 or within 30 days of the notice’s publication, you will still take the 2008 civics test version.
