As of June 18, 2025, the U.S. has resumed student visa interviews for F, M, and J visa applicants after temporarily halting new embassy appointments on May 27. The pause was ordered by Secretary of State Marco Rubio to allow time for expanding social media screening procedures. Under the new rules, all student visa applicants must make their social media profiles public and accessible during the application process. U.S. officials may closely examine recent posts as part of the background check, and failure to comply could result in visa denial. While existing appointments from before the pause were honored, new bookings are now being accepted with this stricter vetting in place. Students concerned about privacy or past digital activity are encouraged to seek legal guidance before their interviews.
