Effective March 30, 2026, the U.S. Department of State implemented expanded screening procedures for visa applicants, particularly affecting individuals from countries subject to travel-related restrictions. Under this update, broader review of social media and online presence now applies to additional nonimmigrant visa categories, including H, F, M, J, K, R, T, and U visas, among others. Applicants may be instructed to make social media accounts publicly accessible for review as part of the vetting process. Visa adjudications are increasingly treated as national security determinations, with officers utilizing a wide range of available information to assess eligibility. As a result, applicants should expect heightened scrutiny, potential processing delays, and more frequent requests for clarification or additional evidence. It is critical that all application materials remain accurate and consistent, and that applicants are mindful of their digital presence.
