Starting October 30, 2025, individuals who apply to renew their work permits no longer receive an automatic extension while their renewal is pending, except in limited cases such as Temporary Protected Status (TPS) or other categories specified by law or Federal Register notice. This change means that applicants will now undergo additional screening and vetting before their work authorization is extended. USCIS advises applicants to file their EAD renewal applications up to 180 days before expiration to reduce the risk of a gap in employment authorization. The rule does not affect work permits that were automatically extended before October 30, 2025, but anyone filing after that date should plan ahead to avoid interruptions in work eligibility.
