Effective October 1, 2026, the Department of State will expand its online presence review to applicants for I, TN, and TD nonimmigrant visas.

What applicants need to do

Applicants in these categories are instructed to set the privacy settings on all of their social media profiles to “public” or “open” to facilitate the screening process.

Categories already subject to screening

The expanded review adds these categories to several others already subject to online presence screening, including F, M, J, H-1B, H-4, and certain other nonimmigrant visa classifications.

If you are applying for an I, TN or TD visa, update your social media privacy settings before your visa interview.
