U.S. Visa Interview Waivers End October 2025
Major Change: In-Person Interviews Required
Starting October 1, 2025, the U.S. Department of State will require most nonimmigrant visa applicants to attend an in-person interview at a U.S. consulate. This ends the broad interview waiver program that had been in place for several years.
Applicants across New York, all 50 U.S. states, and abroad should expect longer wait times and reduced appointment availability.
Limited Interview Waivers Still Allowed
A small number of applicants will still qualify for waivers:
- B1/B2 Tourist and Business Visa renewals, if:
- Renewal is within 12 months of expiration
- The prior visa was issued after age 18
- No past denials exist
- Renewal is within 12 months of expiration
- Certain diplomatic and official visas:
- A visas (foreign government officials)
- G visas (international organizations)
- NATO visas
- TECRO E-1 (Taiwan representatives)
- A visas (foreign government officials)
Which Visa Categories Are Impacted?
The following nonimmigrant visa types now require interviews:
- F-1 Student Visa and J-1 Exchange Visitor Visa
- H-1B Visa for specialty occupations
- L-1 Visa for intra-company transfers
- E-1 Visa for treaty traders
- E-2 Visa for treaty investors
- O-1 Visa for extraordinary ability professionals
- TN Visa for Canadian and Mexican professionals
In addition, the age-based exemptions (under 14 and over 79) are no longer valid.
What Applicants Should Expect
This change will:
- Increase consular processing times worldwide
- Make appointment slots more competitive in busy posts such as New York, London, and Mumbai
- Require applicants to plan months in advance for travel or employment timelines
To prepare, applicants should:
- Secure appointments early
- Gather strong supporting documentation
- Work with an experienced U.S. immigration attorney to avoid delays
